Our Archive search bar allows users to isolate the subjects they are interested in and examine them according to their preferences. The search bar works best with our auto-fill fixed tags. View All Tags Here). Users may enter search terms in quotation marks for specific word results.
Full viewing options can be accessed below the search bar. They should be used to sort out search results after they have already been entered.
- The General tab gives options for viewing the images you have selected: the Thumbnail view is the most minimal on details and is the fastest to skim through. The Details view is the default and provides the image with its caption to the right, and is useful for quick chronological research. The Gallery view is a full-screen viewing option for your search results. The General tab is also where you would enable graphic images to appear in your search results.
- The Sort by tab is where you determine the ordering of your photograph selection by the Date Taken, the Date Uploaded or by Name (alphabetical order).
- The Date Taken tab provides various date isolation options for your photos.
- If you are researching a Topic or Event and wish to isolate it by region, select your desired area in the Region tab.
- The License tab allows you to isolate search results based on the Creative Commons License which you wish to access and is relevant if you want to reuse work you find on Konflictcam.
- The Importance tab allows users to isolate photographs based on User Impressions ratings.
- You can Clear your criteria on the last tab.
We have placed buttons for Konflictcam's ten main topics at the bottom of the Archive Page for ease of use.

US Marine Provides Covering Fire, Battle of Okinawa, Japan, May 1945

"Two Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment during fighting at Wana Ridge during the Battle of Okinawa, May 1945. On the left, Davis Hargraves (1925-) provides covering fire with his M1 Thompson submachinegun as Gabriel Chavarria (on the right; 1926-), with a Browning Automatic Rifle, prepares to break cover to move to a different position. Wana Ridge was a long coral spine running out of northern Shuri Hill and was lined on both sides with Okinawan tombs. Japanese emplacements in the tombs and on the reverse slope of the ridge forced the Marines to carefully fight their way through the fortifications. A Japanese counterattack on the Marines on the ridge on 22 May was repelled. It is not known if this photo was taken before or after the Japanese counterattack. Note that the photographer has apparently taken the picture from a covered position behind the ridgeline."

"A few yards behind the front lines on Okinawa, fighting men of the US Armys 77th Infantry division listen to radio reports of Germanys surrender on May 8, 1945. Their battle hardened faces indicate the impassiveness with which they received the news of the victory on a far distant front. One minute after this photo was taken, they returned to their combat post, officially however, American forces on Okinawa celebrated the end of the war in Europe by training every ship and shore battery on a Japanese target and firing one shell simultaneously and precisely at midnight. Okinawa is a strategic island in the Ryukyu (Loochoo chain), situated 375 miles from Japan."

HMS Formidable After Being Struck by Kamikaze, Sakishima Islands, Japan, May 1945

"The aircraft carrier HMS Formidable (R67) on fire after being struck by a Kamikaze off Sakishima Gunto. Formidable was hit at 1130 hrs, the kamikaze making a massive dent about 3 m long, 0.6 m wide and deep in the armoured flight deck. A large steel splinter speared down through the hangar deck and the centre boiler-room, where it ruptured a steam line, and came to rest in a fuel tank, starting a major fire in the aircraft park. Eight crew members were killed and forty-seven were wounded. One Vought Corsair and ten Grumman Avengers were destroyed."

"Kamikaze attack on the USS Missouri (BB-63). About to be hit by a Japanese A6M "Zero" kamikaze, while operating off Okinawa on 11 April 1945. The plane hit the ship's side below the main deck, causing minor damage and no casualties on board the battleship. A 40 mm quad gun mount's crew is in action in the lower foreground. The kamikaze on the photo has been identified as either Flight Petty Officer 2nd Class Setsuo Ishino or Flight Petty Officer 2nd Class Kenkichi Ishii."
