Algae Bloom on Lake Erie
Taken on 2014-08-03
For at least fifty years, phytoplankton and algae blooms have been a regular occurrence in summer on Lake Erie.
The dominant organism in the Lake Erie bloom is Microcystis spp., a type of freshwater blue-green algae that produces a toxin harmful to humans. On August 2, 2014, environmental monitors for Toledo and surrounding towns in northwestern Ohio determined that public water supplies had levels of microcystin toxin that were higher than recommended by the World Health Organization. They warned residents not to drink or cook with tap water; boiling is not effective against the toxin. Though the bloom has continued, treatment facilities have since added extra filtering steps (including activated carbon), and public water sources were declared safe again on August 4.
Blooms of microcystis and other species of phytoplankton occur almost every summer on Lake Erie, where chemical nutrients (mainly phosphorous and nitrogen) are plentiful due to decades of runoff from farms and cities.

Intended Afghan Naval Craft Remain in Yorktown VA, June 2014
Taken on 2014-06-06
The Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, released a report stating the eight rigid-hulled inflatable boats were at one time considered a priority for the Afghan forces. Afghanistan already utilizes four similar boats, and these eight were intended to deter smuggling on its north and west border, the report said.
The Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, or CSTC-A, which includes multinational military counterparts, canceled the requirements for the boats, but the boats were nearly completed and shipped to the Cheatham Annex in Yorktown, Va., where they have remained since 2011, the report said.

Tornado Touchdown in Oklahoma, USA, May 2013
Taken on 2013-05-31
During the early evening of May 31, 2013, the widest tornado in recorded history occurred over rural areas of Central Oklahoma. Part of a larger weather system that produced dozens of tornadoes over the preceding days, the tornado initially touched down at 6:03 p.m. CDT (2303 UTC) about 8.3 miles (13.4 km) west-southwest of El Reno. The storm rapidly grew in size and became more violent. Remaining over mostly open terrain, the tornado did not impact many structures; however, measurements from mobile Doppler weather radars revealed extreme winds in excess of 296 mph (476 km/h) within the tornado. As it crossed Highway 81, it had grown to a record-breaking width of 2.6 miles (4.2 km). Turning northeastward, the tornado soon weakened. After crossing Interstate 40, the tornado dissipated around 6:43 p.m. CDT (2343 UTC), after tracking for 16.2 miles (26.1 km), avoiding affecting more densely populated areas near and within the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.

Placard from Planned Parenthood Rally in New York City
Taken on 2011-02-26
Planned Parenthood is a women's health care non-profit organization that has provided health services, predominately reproductive services, to women in the United States for nearly 100 years. Planned Parenthood tends to 2.7 million patients a year, and is a key healthcare provider for many low-income individuals.
Planned parenthood has been targeted by pro-life activists and religious groups for many years in regards to its abortion services. Recent attempts to pass legislation that would defund Planned Parenthood have not succeeded.
