Delhi Police attack on Manipuri students; New Delhi, India, June 2016

Taken on 2016-06-07

Delhi Police attacked students from the Northeast Indian state of Manipur in a lathi-charge (with sticks) at the Manipur Bhavan in New Delhi. The students were protesting against Inner Line Permit (ILP) related bills in Manipur which restrict mobility in certain parts of the country. Manipur, like other states in Northeast India, has historically been subject to gross negligence and abuse at the hands of national authorities; an unresolved and ongoing problem. Violent repression of protesters is a commonplace occurrence.

Peace March in Homage to Student Rohith Vemula; India, Feb 2016

Peace March in Homage to Student Rohith Vemula; India, Feb 2016

Taken on 2016-02-17

Translated from french: "Peaceful march of JNU students in homage to Rohith Vemula, PhD student at the University of Hyderabad. He committed suicide on 17 January after suffering from discrimination due to his low caste and after being expelled from his university for carrying out political activities in favour of untouchables. Hundreds of policemen turned up to handle the sixty-or-so students. The police chased the students and 'captured' them, often violently, with a ratio of 3 to 5 policemen for a single person, sometimes dragging them to the ground... I do not have photos of this stage because I, too, was busy running away. All the people were then put in buses which had already been summoned for this action and then taken to the police station for a day of detention. Long live the liberty of expression! (Vive la liberté d'expression!)" -Anouch Carracilly (photographer) The central government of India, which is led by the BJP, has led a massive crackdown on students at Delhi's prestigious Jawarhal Nehru University (JNU) over the last few days. Policemen and even politicians have beaten up students and arrested them at random and with no legal justification for the same. The BJP was enraged at the criticism levelled against its policies by the students of the university during a peaceful discussion on their campus.

Bring the Pain

Bring the Pain

Taken on 2012-06-27

We heard the sounds of growing chants during our first dinner in Athens. The voices grew in intensity, and then we noticed the riot poice had blocked all the roads to Parliament. These vehicles convey a "none shall pass" attitude. A quick check with Google translate showed that this was not a family-friendly faction as it might have seemed. It a neo-Nazi group called the "Golden Dawn" with a fascist focus on immigrants. And then I read that over half of the police voted for the "Golden Dawn" party. They grew from 1% to 7% of the popular vote in the 2012 election. At one point, they turn to someone who walked over from the Parliament building above, perhaps some of the 18 Golden Dawn party members elected to the Parliament.
