Women and children fleeing ISIS occupied territory around Tal Abyad. A number of the featured women are seen removing their black burkas revealing brightly colored outfits in order to celebrate their freedom. The photos were taken west of Tal Abyad, known to the Kurdish as Girê Sipî, which has been under ISIS control since last year, according to local Kobani photo-journalist Jack Shahine. It is one of a few Turkish border crossings still ruled by ISIS.

It’s hard enough being a refugee anywhere in the world, having to uproot and leave your home, friends and family behind. But can you imagine being a refugee for nearly 40 years? That’s the situation facing Sahrawi refugees – one of the oldest refugee groups in the world – who began fleeing their homes in 1975, when conflict in Western Sahara sharply escalated. The refugees, living in five camps in Tindouf, south-western Algeria, refuse to return home until there’s a political resolution to the crisis – including a referendum on self-determination. In the meantime, refugees depend heavily on international aid provided by donors including the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) having little access to other resources.

Rohingya Refugee Rural Slum; Kutupalong, Bangladesh, Mar 2015

Taken on 2015-03-31

The Rohingya people are a Muslim minority group historically based in Rakhine state, Myanmar. The Rohingya people are considered “stateless entities”, as the Myanmar government has been refusing to recognise them as one of the ethnic groups of the country. To escape persecution and hostility, the Rohingya people have being fleeing Myanmar and Bangladesh in high numbers. From January to March in 2015, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that 25,000 people have been taken to boats by human traffickers. There are claims that around 100 people died in Indonesia, 200 in Malaysia, and 10 in Thailand (see 2015 Wiki 'Rohingya Refugee Crisis' page for more information) Featured in this photo report are scenes of Rohingya refugees settled in rural slums around the UNCHR-government run camp of Kutupalong. Unlike the refugees settled in the UNCHR camp, who are entitled to shelter, food rations, access to school and health services, the unregistered refugees in the slum are considered illegal migrants and therefore don’t have access to any government or UN services.

A year ago, Islamic State militants (ISIS) attacked the Yazidi minority community in northern Iraq, killing hundreds of men and enslaving thousands of women. More than 100,000 Yazidi fled Sinjar since August 2014 when ISIS first launched the attack. Many Yazidi women were kidnapped and enslaved and the men were butchered. Yazidi activists say they have gathered a list of at least 4,600 missing Yazidi women. Most of these women are sold to other ISIS members or put on the slave market.

In Myanmar/Burma, the Rohingya have very limited access to basic services and viable livelihood opportunities. Many live in camps where they have only limited access to health care and education, and no livelihood opportunities. Since 2012, widespread inter-communal violence has put Rohingya in an increasingly diffcult situation.

Myanmar's Rakhine State: different realities of displaced, confined and resettled communities

Myanmar's Rakhine State: different realities of displaced, confined and resettled communities

Taken on 2014-05-28

Following the inter-communal violence which erupted in 2012, many people from minority groups were forced to leave their house and find refuge in camps. Others were confined to their villages without the possibility to leave them, whatever the reason. Rakhine (Buddhist) people instead were resettled in new houses in villages located in majority-Muslim areas. In this album, the villages, camps and shelters of Rakhine, Rohingya and Maramagyi people speak of the difference life conditions of these communities in Myanmar.
