Photos of a Northern Alliance rally memorializing Ahmed Shah Masood. Masood was a key commander during the Soviet-Afghan War and the subsequent Afghan Civil War, generally viewed as a national hero in Afghanistan today. He was assassinated days before the 9/11/2001 attack. The Northern Alliance played a key part in ousting the Taliban during the US-led coalition invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

On 16 December 2014, 9 gunmen affiliated with the Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) conducted a terrorist attack on the Army Public School in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar. The militants, all of whom were foreign nationals, included one Chechen, three Arabs and two Afghans. They entered the school and opened fire on school staff and children, killing 145 people, including 132 schoolchildren, ranging between eight and eighteen years of age. The first image shows four teenagers wearing Army Public School uniforms while standing on the cricket pitch at the school. The first photo was taken before the attack. The second image shows the two friends who survived in a re-stage of the original image.
