"Vladimir Putin addressed via videoconference all present at a concert in Palmyra by the Mariinsky State Academic Symphony Orchestra under the direction of National Artist of Russia Valery Gergiev. The concert, titled Prayer for Palmyra – Music Brings the Ancient Walls to Life, took place at the ancient town’s world famous amphitheatre." Palmyra had previously been under Islamic State control for several months, until the Syrian Government reclaimed the city on 27 March with Russian support. IS had used Palmyra's historic Roman amphitheater to stage executions and propaganda videos.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Belarus's capital, Minsk, to protest current President Alexander Lukashenko's election campaign that would see him stay on as the nation's President for a 5th term. Opponents of Lukashenko have cited a history of corruption and fraud in the nation's past elections, a claim supported by OSCE reports. Belarus has been labeled "Europe's last dictatorship" by some Western journalists, on account of Lukashenko's self-described authoritarian style of government.

The Palestinian flag was raised outside the headquarters of the United Nations in New York for the first time on Sept 30 2015 at the U.N. head quarter (U.N. Rose Garden). Prior to the symbolic raising of the flag, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told the U.N. General Assembly that the Palestinian Authority was no longer bound by the Oslo Peace Accords. At the flag raising ceremony, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the occasion a "day of pride for the Palestinian people around the world" and a "day of hope." "Now is the time to restore confidence by both Israelis and Palestinians for a peaceful settlement and, at last, the realization of two states for two peoples," he said.

The above photo features protesters demonstrating against the expected passage of a security bill allowing Japanese troops to fight abroad. Organisers said about 120,000 people took part in the rally in the government district of Tokyo, outside the parliament, or Diet. Similar demonstrations were held across the nation. In July, the lower house passed the bills that allow the army, or Self-Defense Forces, to engage in combat when allies come under attack even when Japan itself is not. The upper house is currently debating the bills and is expected to pass them by late September, making it law.
