Peace March in Homage to Student Rohith Vemula; India, Feb 2016

Taken on 2016-02-17

Translated from french: "Peaceful march of JNU students in homage to Rohith Vemula, PhD student at the University of Hyderabad. He committed suicide on 17 January after suffering from discrimination due to his low caste and after being expelled from his university for carrying out political activities in favour of untouchables. Hundreds of policemen turned up to handle the sixty-or-so students. The police chased the students and 'captured' them, often violently, with a ratio of 3 to 5 policemen for a single person, sometimes dragging them to the ground... I do not have photos of this stage because I, too, was busy running away. All the people were then put in buses which had already been summoned for this action and then taken to the police station for a day of detention. Long live the liberty of expression! (Vive la liberté d'expression!)" -Anouch Carracilly (photographer) The central government of India, which is led by the BJP, has led a massive crackdown on students at Delhi's prestigious Jawarhal Nehru University (JNU) over the last few days. Policemen and even politicians have beaten up students and arrested them at random and with no legal justification for the same. The BJP was enraged at the criticism levelled against its policies by the students of the university during a peaceful discussion on their campus.

Protests, or riots depending on your outlook, erupted at Mong Kong shopping area at the start of Chinese New Year, in response to police trying to shut down the unlicensed food stalls in the area. Commentators say that these streetfood stands are symbolic og Hong Kong culture, and the events came at a time of worsening relations with the Chinese central government. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2016/feb/09/hong-kong-fish-ball-revolution-china-riot http://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/08/asia/hong-kong-riots-shots-fired/

Ankara Central Railway Station Bombings; Ankara, Turkey, Oct 2015

Taken on 2015-10-10

On 10 October 2015 at 10:04 local time (EEST) in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, two bombs were detonated outside Ankara Central railway station. As of October 16, the death toll stood at 102 and more than 400 people were injured. The bombs appeared to target a "Labour, Peace and Democracy" rally organised by the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK), the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and the Confederation of Public Workers' Unions (KESK). The rally was held to protest against the growing conflict between the Turkish Armed Forces and the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The incident occurred 21 days before the scheduled 1 November general election. The attack was the deadliest of its kind in Turkey's modern history. The governing Justice and Development Party (AKP), the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) condemned the attack and called it an attempt to cause division within Turkey.CHP and MHP leaders heavily criticized the government for the security failure, whereas HDP directly blamed the AKP government for the bombings. Various political parties ended up cancelling their election campaigns while three days of national mourning were declared by the Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu. No organisation has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The Ankara Attorney General stated that they were investigating the possibility of two cases of suicide bombings. On October 19, one of the two suicide bombers was officially identified as Yunus Emre Alagöz, an ethnic Kurd from Adıyaman and the younger brother of Abdurrahman Alagöz, the perpetrator of the Suruç bombing; both brothers have suspected links to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the ISIL affiliated Dokumacılar group. Pinjra Tod Demonstration; Delhi, New India, Oct 2015

Taken on 2015-10-15

Featured in this photo report are scenes of university students in Delhi protesting against sexist rules for women's hostels and the lack of proper anti-sexual harassment resources across Indian universities. The campaign is called Pinjra Tod (Break the Cage) in response to the fact that female students are routinely locked inside their hostels after dark whilst male students face no curfews. 'Images from an energetic and cathartic protest outside Telangana Bhawan (New Delhi) today by pinjratod in solidarity with the struggle of our women comrades from Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad. Rule-books of hostels from universities across Delhi were torn and burnt, and a memorandum was submitted to the Resident Commissioner. We also blocked the main gate of Telangana Bhawan for the duration of the protest and when VIP officials wanted to get out in their fancy cars, we demanded that they show us a permission letter from their Local Guardians and enquired if their parents knew where they were going. We told them that it would be better for their own 'safety' to remain inside the gates.' - Pinjratod facebook page

Moldovans Rally Against Government Corruption; Chisinau, Sept 2015

Moldovans Rally Against Government Corruption; Chisinau, Sept 2015

Taken on 2015-09-06

Tens of thousands of Moldovans rallied in the nation's capital, Chisinau, protesting a recent bank fraud that has seen $1 billion disappear from the national banking system - roughly one eighth of Moldova's gross domestic output. As a result of the fraud, the small and largely rural country's currency has depreciated significantly, raising inflation and adversely affecting already low living standards. Protesters came from all over the country and called for the resignation of President Nicolae Timofti, chanting "Victory! Bring the one billion back home!". Police put protester numbers at between 35,000 - 40,000 people - organizers put their estimates at three times as many(see Moldovan Protests 2015 Wikipedia page for more information).
