Protests in Bahrain Against the Formula 1 Grand Prix; April 2015

Taken on 2015-04-16

The photos featured in this report present scenes of protesters and protester lit fires in respect to the 2015 Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix. Maryam al-Khawaja, of the Gulf Centre for Human Rights told the Guardian newspaper that “The problem is that the F1 isn’t just being used as part of that whitewash, the F1 actually causes human rights violations in Bahrain,” “Right before the race we have the government going on an arrest spree to try and prevent protest. We have protesters cracked down on during the F1 and the violence that is used is usually more than what we see for the rest of the year. F1 causes human rights violations and for that reason it should not come to Bahrain.” For the Bahraini opposition, which has been holding sustained demonstrations against the government since 2011, the Grand Prix serves as an opportunity to spread awareness of their cause around the world and the plight of political prisoners in the island kingdom.

Protest by South Asian Labourers in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, March 2015

Taken on 2015-03-10

Hundreds of South Asian labourers took to the streets in Dubai on Tuesday to protest unpaid wages and working conditions, prompting the emirate to mobilise riot police. Local reports said the striking workers ripped down corrugated iron fences at a development belonging to Emaar Properties and even came onto the streets to block traffic near the Dubai Mall. The sight of protesting labourers is jarring in a country where demonstrations and unionising are illegal and could easily lead to deportation.

Oak Flat Copper Mining Conflict; Arizona, U.S., Feb-March 2015

Taken on 2015-03-18

About 100 miles north of Tucson, Resolution Copper Mining wants to build a mine in Superior, a town of 2,800 people, that could yield 1 billion pounds of copper a year. The land Resolution wants includes the 760-acre Oak Flat Withdrawal Area, which was deemed off-limits to future mining by a 1955 land order signed by President Dwight Eisenhower. The bill would overturn that order. The mine would devastate the surface of Oak Flat, an area sacred to Apache tribes. It’s an ancestral home for several clans of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, some of whom are protesting the development.

Thousands protest after 43 students disappeared in Iguala, Mexico. Officials say they were handed over by authorities to a local drug gang. This is an example of the larger problem of the impunity regarding numerous enforced disappearances. Mexico's Attorney General stated there is no doubt that the 43 students were murdered and their remains incinerated and dumped into a river in the nearby town of Cocula.
