Indonesian soldiers with one of the last automatic weapons surrendered by Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM) rebels as part of the 2005 peace deal. The Southeast Asian Tsunami Disaster of 2004 likely had some impact in bringing about the end of hostilities between Acehnese rebels and the Indonesian government.

Dutch Special Forces Sergeant Being Executed by Japanese Soldier, New Guinea, Dutch East Indies, Oct

"A photograph found on the body of a dead Japanese soldier showing NX143314 Sergeant (Sgt) Leonard G. Siffleet of "M" Special Unit, wearing a blindfold and with his arms tied, about to be beheaded with a sword by Yasuno Chikao. The execution was ordered by Vice Admiral Kamada, the commander of the Japanese Naval Forces at Aitape. Sgt Siffleet was captured with Private (Pte) Pattiwahl and Pte Reharin, Ambonese members of the Netherlands East Indies Forces, whilst engaged in reconnaissance behind the Japanese lines. Yasuno Chikao died before the end of the war."

"Studio portrait of Jan Ruff O'Herne, taken shortly before she, her mother and sisters, as well as thousands of other Dutch women and children were interned by the Japanese Imperial Army in Ambarawa. Over the following months, O'Herne, along with six other Dutch women, were repeatedly raped, day and night, by Japanese military personnel." Exact date unknown.
