SA3 Missiles Safely Destroyed in Koulikouro, Mali, 2014

Taken on 2014-10-24

United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) safely destroyed 85 SA3 missiles in the Koulikouro region of Western Mali. Recent and on-going armed conflict in Mali has created a problem of weapon and explosive hazard contamination which negatively impacts the civilian population as well as impedes stabilization efforts. The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) launched in September 2013 a pilot project in the field of Physical Security of Stockpiles of Weapons and ammunition Management (PSSM). The 2014-2015 PSSM Action Plan, which was approved by the Ministry of Defence, includes: the destruction of expired stockpiles of weapons and ammunition, the rehabilitation of armories, the set-up of temporary storage sites, trainings to the Malian Defence and Security Forces and the elaboration of national standards.

Memorial ceremony held in honor of two Blue Helmets from Burkina Faso killed in a suicidal attack in Ber, Timbuktu region, on August 16, 2014. Despite initial security improvements in 2013, the situation in Northern Mali has deteriorated since the beginning of 2014. An increase in incidents involving improvised explosive devices, mostly targeting Malian and international security forces, has impeded the return to normalcy and resumption of economic and development activities.

United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Field Support, Anthony Banbury, visited the town of Kidal in northern Mali. Located in a remote corner of the Sahara desert, Kidal is a last stronghold to rebel Tuareg groups, that overran entire north of the country in early 2012. Since signing a peace accord with the Malian government in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, regular army and civil administration is trickling back, with strong support of the international community. Since July 1st, African – led military mission has became United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Mali. The logistic task of supporting such heavy military presence in this remote location is daunting.
