Protests, or riots depending on your outlook, erupted at Mong Kong shopping area at the start of Chinese New Year, in response to police trying to shut down the unlicensed food stalls in the area. The image shows the amassing of Hong Kong University students to initiate a boycott of lectures as a form of protest against the changes to the university's governing council. Protests were initiated by the appointment of Arthur Li Kwok-Cheung to the position of university council chairman by Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. The students involved in the protest request that at a minimum of half the seats in the council are filled by university members. They also call for the appointed of the chairman by the council and not the chief executive.

A series of explosions in the city of Tianjin killed at least 44 people and 500 were hospitalized, 66 of them for critical injuries. The initial explosion erupted at a warehouse for a logistics company in an industrial area of the port city. The state-run news agency Xinhua reported that an explosion tore through a warehouse storing "dangerous and chemical goods."
