With the conflict in Syria well into its fifth year, the needs of the over one million Syrian refugees who fled to Lebanon are now greater than ever. A recent study has shown that at least 70 percent of Syrian refugees in Lebanon live below the national poverty line – an increase from 50 percent compared to last year – having exhausted their meagre savings and having with limited access to income opportunities. Among the most at risk are elderly refugees, who often suffer from higher levels of hardship due to reduced physical strength and chronic illness. The European Commission funds the UN Refugee Agency's cash assistance programme targeted to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, and supports a range of other services. For the elderly, this can be a lifeline.

Photographs documenting from the discovery of the body of Aylan Kurdi to his funeral and burial alongside his mother and brother. Some of the photos within the report are graphic. These photos serve as an example of the power of the internet, as due to the viral nature of the photographs of the body of Aylan which were printed in many newspapers globally, there is a large press contingent at his funeral. However, he and his family are only a handful amongst the many thousands more who have died already, or who are likely to perish, in attempting to flee the conflict in Syria.

The images in this photo report were taken in the Summer of 2015. The Calais migrant crisis refers to the ongoing situation involving refugees and migrants traveling from the French port city of Calais to the United Kingdom, often by crossing the Channel Tunnel or by boarding lorries heading for ferries that cross the English Channel. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, ten people have died trying to cross the Channel Tunnel since the start of June 2015. The crisis has also led to the formation of migrant camps in Calais, one of which--"the Jungle"—has been estimated to have approximately 3,000 inhabitants.

Scenes from The Yemeni Civil War; Mar - Jun 2015

Taken on 2015-06-25 *

The images presented in this photo report capture scenes of devastation and human suffering caused by the ongoing Civil War in Yemen. The plight of ordinary Yemeni civilians has worsened in recent months due to the introduction of air-strikes, which began on March 26 2015, conducted by Saudi Arabia and a coalition of nine Arab states, and the intensification of the civil war between forces loyal to the internationally recognized but contested President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi on one side, and a coalition of Houthi forces and forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh on the other side. The Saudi-led intervention supports forces loyal to the Hadi government. The combination of airstrikes and ground warfare has made the supply of critical aid to civilians extremely difficult. The UN estimates that 13 million in Yemen require immediate assistance. Due to the extensive violence, citizens of Yemen are unable to obtain the necessary aid.
