White armband day memorial in Sarajevo

Taken on 2019-05-31

The picture was taken during the commemoration of "White armband"day, which remembers the victims of the war in the Northwestern city of Prijedor. The event always sparks controversy and tension between different victim groups, citizens and members of different ethnic communities. In this particular case, the AntiDayton group set up this memorial in Veliki Park (Sarajevo) showcasing pictures and names of the victims of war in Prijedor. White armband day is commemorated on May 30 as it was on this date in 1992 where authorities in Prijedor instructed for citizens "not loyal to the Serb Republic of Bosnia-Heryegovina" to display a white flag at the entrance of their homes. This was followed by ethnic cleansing of Bosniak and Croat citizens in the area.

Srebrenica Anniversary Burial; Srebrenica Bosnia, July 2016

Taken on 2016-07-11

This picture was taken on the commemoration of the Srebrenica massacre in the Potocari cemetery in Bosnia-Herzegovina. After the religious celebration, various burials were organized in the cemetery for recently found victim remains. The Srebrenica anniversary and the events surrounding this commemoration have become quite controversial events in the politics of Bosnia. The anniversary itself brings together members of the Bosniak and Bosnian Muslim community to mourn, remember and advocate for the victims of the events of July 11th, 1995. Yet the commemoration tends to be contested by politicians and members of other ethnic groups, showing the social divisions in the country.

The monument is established as a map of RS and within it are objects that belong to victims of the Srebrenica massacre.
